“She has her own place now, but…I can’t tell you where she lives, Will. As much as I want to, she would kill me.”

“I’ll just look her up in the phone book.”

“She’s not listed.” Charlotte sighed. “Listen, I know it’s probably not any consolation for you, but I was the one telling her to give you another chance last Christmas. I thought she was too hasty.”

He smiled sadly. “Thanks, but you’re right. It’s no consolation. Can you at least let her know I’m here? It’s Saturday, she’s not working. Can you call her?”

“I don’t–I don’t know. It might not be such a good idea. She’s worked really hard to get over you, and—”

“What does that mean?” he asked, his stomach flipping. “Is she–is she seeing someone? Does she have a boyfriend?”

She frowned. “I’m going to take pity on you and tell you that no, she doesn’t. She hasn’t dated, she’s not seeing anyone, and again, she would kill me if she knew I was talking to you. I’m seriously violating several rules of the best friend code.”

“I just want to see her.” His eyes strayed from hers. “I miss her. I still love her.”

And my mother died.

He debated telling Charlotte, but ultimately decided not to. Elizabeth likely knew, anyway; Jane had probably told her by now.

“I’m sorry. I wish things were different, I really do,” she said, and he knew she meant it.

“Hey, no worries. I’m sorry I put you on the spot. It’s nice to see you, though.”

She gave him a quick hug. “It’s nice to see you, too. Bye, Will.”

As he walked back to his rental car, he felt a sense of resolve, and knew it was time to move on. He’d gone to Burlington to see Elizabeth, but why? Did he think that after a year, she would suddenly want to see him, talk to him, take him back? It wasn’t what he thought, not really.

The truth of the matter was he had lost his mother, the only parent who truly supported him, and he knew in his gut that Elizabeth was the one person who could provide the comfort he so desperately needed.

But Elizabeth was a part of his past, and he had to look toward the future.

As soon as he arrived in—Milwaukee?—he would reach out to that indie record label to tell them he was interested in meeting with them and listening to what they had in mind for him. And he would start writing new music. Good music. Happy music.

What the heck, maybe I’ll even record some Christmas songs.
